Apple announces watchOS 5 at WWDC

That watch, along with Apple's array of other watches, will be compatible with WatchOS 5. The move has, of course, been on the cards, though, with the more recent Apple Watches all carrying more beefy internals which is clearly something watchOS 5 requires in order to make its new features possible.

Apple is working on a pair of new Apple Watches that keep the overall size of the current models, but include slightly larger, edge-to-edge screens, Bloomberg News reported last week.

With watchOS 5, Apple Watch replaces Student ID cards. The somewhat overlooked social networking aspect of the platform is being bolstered with competitions between friends, and you get notifications on your progress every step of the 7-day challenges. It will automatically detect when you've started in a workout, and ask you whether to start or stop logging your activity.

Apple also unveiled iOS 12, macOS Mojave and tvOS12 which boasts immersive Dolby Atmos 3D sound.

The Workout app also adds Hiking as an exercise and will sense elevation to ensure that you're properly tracking calories for all of those steep inclines. Think of it like voice messages in iMessage...but simpler and on your wrist. Walkie Talkie works over cellular and Wi-Fi.

Apple's Podcasts app will allow users to listen to episodes by just using Siri. It now offers more predictive and proactive shortcuts throughout the day based on routines, locations and information such as heart rate after a workout, commute time with Maps at the appropriate time of day or sports scores for a favorite team.

Users will also be able to answer FaceTime calls as audio, add cities to weather, access a new emoji picker, access air quality and wind direction/speed in the weather app, add stocks, customise the control centre and much more.

Apple never disclosed how many gold Apple Watch Editions it sold, but sharp-eyed fans have spotted the watch on celebrities like Beyonce, Kanye West, Pharrell, Katy Perry, Drake, and Karl Lagerfeld. Apple is partnering with a handful of universities, including Duke, Johns Hopkins and Temple University, to roll out that integration this fall. Just launch the Watch app on your iPhone, tap on the Face Gallery tab, and then download the new face. There are also new notifications and an app for listening to podcasts. Features are subject to change. There isn't any update on whether this feature will be available in India or not.
