The healthiest county is right here in central Ohio-Delaware County.
Lawrence County Ranks 70th in the state in overall health.
Rockland County moved from the number two position in the state previous year to be listed as the healthiest county in the just-released 2018 county health rankings by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
"You have this paradox of having the top and bottom counties next to each other in a part of the same metropolitan area". Allen County's quality of life has consistently been ranked in the 50s the last few years. "Look at the median income in the upper (ranked) counties and the lower (ranked) counties and see how that translates to health".
Health factors has subcategories focused on health behaviors (62th, down from 60th), clinical care (13th, up from 14th), socio-economic factors (44th, up from 47th) and physical environment (78th, down from 66th).
Severe housing problems have stayed fairly flat between 20 and 22 percent for the past five years in Douglas County.
The Crater Health District (CHD), which includes the cities of Petersburg and Emporia, has hosted a number of training workshops over the past year on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma-informed care and resilience within the district. These health gaps are largely influenced by differences in opportunities that disproportionately affect people of color, such as access to quality education, jobs, and safe, affordable housing.
The County Health Rankings are released annually and were first issued in 2010. They also are more than twice as likely to be considered in poor or fair health, and are 67 percent more likely to have a poor mental health day on an average basis.
Statewide, the new report says 15 percent of Iowa children live in poverty.
For more than 40 years the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has worked to improve health and health care.
The County Health Rankings report gives a health snapshot of almost every county in the country. "By focusing on the unique needs of our area, we are starting to see meaningful change".
"That's not to say that they don't exist, but we're a relatively small county, we have relatively small populations of racial and ethnic minorities, so we've got pretty limited data on local disparities", he said.
