The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. has unveiled 42 stores it plans to close nationwide, including eight in Pennsylvania.
"We would like to thank the loyal customers who have shopped at these locations and express deep gratitude to our team of hardworking associates for their commitment to Bon-Ton and to serving our customers", Bon-Ton CEO and President Bill Tracy said in a news release. Employees at the store will be able to interview for positions at other locations, but layoffs are expected, company officials said. The downward spiral has put Bon-Ton on several lists that speculate on possible bankruptcy filings this year.
There is a Bon-Ton at the Wilton Mall, which so far has remained off the closure list. The stores closing will include locations under all of the company's nameplates, such as Herberger's, Carson's, Bergner's, and Younkers.
The Superior store is one of nine stores closing in Wisconsin.
Aviation Mall is losing Bon-Ton as part of the department store chain's reorganization.
Milwaukee- and York, Pa.,-based Bon-Ton said on Wednesday it will close Carson's at Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg, Riverside Plaza in Chicago and clearance centers in Aurora and Morton Grove. "I am here all the time", said Judith Fox, Stroudsburg. The sale will run for 10 to 12 weeks.
The women said they believe closing doesn't bode well for the mall.
Mary Anne Smith says this location is convenient for her and believes too many big name stores are closing.
"The owners of the mall need to decide where to go from here", Mayor Robert Mielke said.
