From sending messages and setting an alarm, to playing your favourite music and podcasts and finding out the latest news and weather, the HomePod aims to put Siri to its best use.

HomePod when integrated with HomeKit enabled devices can also be used to turn on lights, adjust the thermostat, unlock doors or raise window shades. Only slightly more expensive than one Apple HomePod.

Standing at seven-inches tall, the HomePod packs a 7 beam-forming tweeter array and a four-inch upward-facing woofer - all powered by the Cupertino company's own A8 chipset. Not long after this announcement, Sonos released the Sonos One, a version that has Alexa build in, and will soon have Google Assistant as well.

Apple's HomePod will only work with Apple services to begin with, meaning you can only listen to Apple Music on your Apple HomePod, and use Apple's voice assistant Siri. The HomePod probably isn't very useful to you either. Considering that the Amazon Echo can be purchased for under $100, one might wonder why anyone would choose to buy the HomePod, but Apple is obviously marketing its speaker as a serious musical device.

The integration of Siri is most welcome on the HomePod, and it can do everything Siri can do for you on your iPhone.

The Apple HomePod is Apple's latest home device release. Unlike Apple's device, Sonos speakers use an open platform that allows consumers to use a plethora of streaming music services, including Amazon Music, Apple Music, Google Play Music, Pandora ( P ), Sirius XM ( SIRI ) and Spotify. While neither are particularly eye-catching, they're also pretty unobtrusive on the whole. The Amazon Echo and the Google Home sound good, but the HomePod elevates sound to another level. Of course, the HomePod came out on top, though Google and Sonos made it a much closer fight than you might think for an Apple demo. But in the world of smart speakers - which is where Apple is now competing, despite its desire to make the conversation all about music - those factors are secondary to the simple question, "How much can this thing do for me?" Meanwhile, other smart speakers already support multi-room music playing.

HomePod is available in Apple's high-street stores and at select Apple Authorised Resellers, including Best Buy in the U.S. and Argos, Dixons Carphone and John Lewis in the UK.

The final piece of the HomePod puzzle is its smart home functionality. Asking Siri to then play the news then provided a morning digest from the news source of your choosing.

Apple's new HomePod wireless speaker is now available for pre-order.
