Trump sees 'progress' as shutdown approaches

The White House laid blame for the government shutdown Friday night on Senate Democrats, calling them "obstructionist losers" in a blistering statement. It lasted for 16 days when many federal employees were forced to take leave of absence.

Crucial differences remain between Trump's Republican Party and the Democratic Party over what should be included in the federal government budget for the fiscal year through September. The measure failed in a final procedural vote that was still open in the Senate early Saturday morning.

The federal government officially shut down at midnight on Saturday. National parks and monuments will also be closed to the public, but essential services will reportedly be allowed to run. However, a new CNN poll finds that, while the DACA program is popular among both Democrats and Republicans, 56 percent of Americans say avoiding a shutdown is more important.

"The reality is that this is not about policy, it's about politics", White House Director of Legislative Affairs Marc Short said at an emergency press conference on Friday.

Neither Democrats nor Republicans - including members of the leadership teams - were able to give reporters many details about negotiations to keep the government open.

Democratic leaders wanted the measure to include protections from deportation for about 700,000 undocumented immigrants who arrived in the United States as children.

During the hours running up to the vote, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) was summoned to the White House by Trump, who delayed a planned weekend trip to his Mar-o-Lago resort in Florida.

In response, the White House accused Democrats of holding "lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands".

The last USA shutdown was in 2013 during the Barrack Obama administration.

The last government shutdown occurred in 2013 when Republican lawmakers unsuccessfully tried to defund the Affordable Care Act.

"They're in charge", Mr Schumer said on Friday as he entered his Capitol office.

While many were seen "congratulating" President Trump, others felt that the shutdown was very much avoidable.

Given that unwillingness to stick to a deal, Democrat came up with a shutdown name of their own - which also became the top trending phrase on Twitter worldwide - the Trump Shutdown.
