A manhunt is underway for a MI woman and her boyfriend charged in the death of the woman's 4-year-old daughter, who suffered injuries that included severe burns on her arms and legs.

Wayne County prosecutors have charged Candice Diaz, 24, the little girl's mother, and Brad Edward Fields, 28, with the preschooler's stomach-turning murder.

According to Sumpter Township police, officers responded around 10:45 a.m. January 1 to a report of an unresponsive 4-year-old girl at a residence in a Sumpter Township mobile home community.

Police say the home where she was found was full of animal waste and contained drugs and guns.

The girl was rushed to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The death was ruled a homicide two days later by the Washtenaw County Medical Examiner, according to police, with evidence of multiple traumatic injuries indicating child abuse.

Fields is a habitual domestic violence offender with two prior incidents, according to court records.

The couple was arrested Tuesday afternoon off I-75 in Lake Park.

According to neighbors, Child Protective Services had been to the home several times over the years, but the children were never taken from the home. Diaz faces murder, child abuse and torture charges. She pleaded guilty to weapons charges and received probation.

Gabrielle Barrett had an upbeat personality and loved the movie Frozen, said her grandfather, Jerry Barrett, 47.

"We didn't know anything was going on".

Brad Fields, 28, faces murder, child abuse and torture charges in the death of Gabrielle Barrett on January 1, 2018.

"She seemed OK, playing outside with the other kids", he said. She was loveable. She was sweet.
