'Captain Marvel' Adds 'She's Gotta Have It' Star DeWanda Wise

A new report from Deadline has confirmed DeWanda Wise has nabbed a role opposite of Brie Larson in the Marvel Studios blockbuster. Maybe that's a dream too far, but now Marvel have cast their first Black female co-lead so anything is possible...

In an intriguing piece of casting, the star of Spike Lee's Netflix series remake She's Gotta Have It, has been hired for Captain Marvel in a key role Her role remains unnamed for now, but we can have a little fun with the speculation. The book, written by Roger Stern and drawn by both John Romitas, introduced Marvel Comics readers to an all-new character named Monica Rambeau, who took on the then-abandoned alias of Captain Marvel. The resulting adjustment imbues her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection and flight.

Captain Marvel is a Marvel Cinematic Universe prequel of sorts, taking place in the 1990s.

Could Wise maybe bring Monica Rambeau to life? The heroine was given extra-dimensional powers when she tried to keep a weapon from being created, and Monica became a hero who operated under the name Captain Marvel. Ben Mendelsohn is playing the villain. Danvers becomes a superhero after her DNA fuses with an alien's after a vehicle accident. Jude Law is also set to appear as the original alien Captain Marvel.

The film will be directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directing with Kevin Feige producing.
