"We have to improve if we must aspire to be world champions", Messi, a five-time Ballon d'Or victor told TyC Sports.

Barcelona forward Messi, who is captain for both club and country, made a decision to retire from worldwide football previous year after the 2016 Copa America final loss to Chile.

"I never went back over the finals we lost".

"People want results and if they do " t get them, they want to see fresh blood.

"But it's true that we need to improve if we want to be world champions".

"If we do badly, the entire national team will have to disappear". "I've said many times that my dream is to play at Newell's, but I don't know what will happen".

Higuain was left out of Jorge Sampaoli's squad for Argentina's final two World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Ecuador in October.

"I'd have to watch them again to see what we didn't get right in order not to win them".

"Nigeria are like that, they have two faces".

Messi also thinks Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain, should be recalled to the Argentina squad. "He has to be [in the team] because he is vital, he is one of the best forwards in the world and he always shows it".

The mercurial playmaker was aware of Argentina's complications and conceeded that there are better teams in the competition.

However, the 30-year-old has insisted he understands how important rest is as the constant game time take its toll on his body more now than in his younger days as a footballer.

"But I think that this time away from the national team has done him good, now he is seeing things in a different light".

Higuain has nine goals and three assists in 13 Serie A starts for Juventus, who are in third place in the table in Italy, two points behind leaders Inter.
