On iPad and its larger screen it is perhaps no surprise that a creative app, illustration app Procreate, was the year's top seller.

Apple has announced its editorial picks for the best apps, movies, TV shows, books, and podcasts available from its various online content stores.

There's some predictable overlap between the two tech titans' lists of 2017 top sellers, as Game of Thrones, for instance, dominates both Apple and Google's latest yearly TV show charts.

The top free iPhone apps of the year included lots of usual suspects: Bitmoji, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, Netflix, Spotify, and Uber.

The top 4 trends of the year according to Apple were AR, multiplayer games, mental and reading apps. Affinity Photo is also a paid-up front app although Calm is free with an optional subscription.

iOS apps are not only limited to the iPhone as Apple also took the time to list the best selling apps on their iPad tablet. Super Mario Run was the most popular free game of 2017, while Heads Up and Minecraft were recognized as the most popular paid ones. Apple also noted trends in iTunes U educational content, with computer science being a huge area of interest, with a strong focus on developing apps with Swift. This includes different categories such as casual games, general apps, augmented reality and more.

To begin with, on Apple Music, Drake topped album of the year with More Life, while Ed Sheeran's Shape of You got top song honors. Taylor Swift's latest album, Reputation, has already reached the third spot on the 2017 United States top album charts despite having just launched on November 10.
