Uncapped pacer Jasprit Bumrah has received his maiden Test call-up, while Parthiv Patel has been selected as the back-up wicketkeeper for the three-match Test series against South Africa. Rohit Sharma will lead the 15-member squad that has former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in it. The surprise additions to the India's Test squad were India wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel and Jasprit Bumrah, who has been recalled into the Test fold for the first time.
Squad for three- match Test series against South Africa: Virat (Capt), Vijay, Rahul, Shikhar, Pujara, Rahane (vc), Rohit, Saha (wk), Ashwin, Jadeja, Parthiv, Hardik, Bhuvneshwar, Shami, Ishant, Umesh, Bumrah.
The Indian squad apparently comprises of two spinners Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja while pace department is fully loaded with six pacers including Pandya.
Hardik Pandya is the only genuine all-rounder while Parthiv Patel, after his gutsy show against England previous year, booked his tickets for South Africa.
"Definitely, this is the best balanced sides that has gone to South Africa", chairman of selectors MSK Prasad said when asked if this was the easiest selection meeting. He said that Bumrah's domestic performances have been taken into account and considering he played a crucial role in Gujarat's triumphant Ranji Trophy campaign, he deserved the opportunity. It's a unanimous choice and he definitely adds variety.
The team will leave for South Africa on December 27.
India captain Virat Kohli, who has been playing non-stop cricket since IPL, will be given a month's break to recharge his batteries before the all-important South Africa tour. "Otherwise, he is a top-class bowler", He explained.
Yuzvender Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Mohammad Siraj, Basil Thampi and Jaydev Unadkat are included for the three-match T20I series.
