New Arizona State Coach Herm Edwards Had A Bizarre First Press Conference

Edwards' Arizona State players may recognize him from his work as an analyst on ESPN, but a lot of them were infants when he delivered his "You play to win the game" rant during a news conference as the head coach of the the New York Jets in 2002.

"When you sign on to do something, you finish", he said.

Arizona State fired Todd Graham on November 26 after his sixth season at the helm. The closest thing he's done in the almost three decades since was serve as the head coach at the Under Armour High School All-American game for the last eight years, where he mentored some of the most talented recruits in the country.

Edwards responded with a joke, but the clip quickly went viral with people suggesting Edwards had no idea he was now coaching the Sun Devils.

"You don't forget how to coach", Edwards said.

"Jameis this Amari. Amari this is Jameis", Edwards recalled saying. "That's kind of football". "Guys in California and Los Angeles should be coming here", he said. Why can't it be?

The announcement, released on ASU's athletics website, comes after reports last week said Edwards would accept the position.

Coach Edwards on recruiting: "Why is this not the destination?"

Anderson didn't provide many details to what exactly that means, but Edwards confirmed he will have a more overarching role that will rely heavily on the staff in place.

"Passion for my faith, my family and my occupation as a football coach are the things that have driven me back to the grass", Edwards said. The New Leadership Model affords coordinators and assistant coaches more flexibility in how they develop student-athletes on the field, and enables Sun Devil Football to build on the "Championship Life" program already in place through the Office of Student-Athlete Development to better equip student-athletes with the tools and skills necessary to succeed in their respective future endeavors.
